The Frankfurt Book Fair is taking place next week and is set to be an incredible jewel in the global book fairs’ crown.

- 1. Lawrence Schimel in conversation with Peter Warwick, President and CEO of Scholastic, October 19, 09:30 – 10:00
Kicking proceedings off with a bang, Peter Warwick will be exploring how Scholastic deals with the topic of diversity. A key theme of this session is: ‘does a publishing house also have to position itself differently internally in order to better reflect social reality in books?’. One to watch for sure!
- 2. The book market in Europe 2021/2022: key data and trends, October 19, 10:30 – 11:00
The European Publishers’ Association is presenting the results of its annual statistical survey of the European book market, which is set to be as insightful as it is useful. FEP President Peter Kraus vom Cleff will kick things off followed by FEP Deputy Director and economist Enrico Turrin who will present the detailed data collected by the FEP on book sales revenues and titles published by European book publishers in 2021. The session will end with discussions around the development of formats and trading channels as well as present the development of the most important markets in 2022.
- 3. Global 50 CEO Talk with Ashleigh Gardner (Wattpad WEBTOON Studios) and Michael Tamblyn (Rakuten Kobo): “Beyond Publishers: New Facets in the Global Book Business”, October 19, 14:00 – 15:00
This talk is set to shed light on the book business beyond traditional publishers, focusing on the the novel ways authors can exploit their intellectual property and open up vast and highly productive areas of creativity, radically expanding what books, publishing and reading are today.
- 4. Best European Learning Materials Awards – BELMA 2022 Prize giving, October 19, 16:00 – 17:00
Hosted by Helga Holtkamp, director of the EEPG, Jean-Claude Lasnier, chairperson of the BELMA jury and Professor Christoph Bläsi from the Gutenberg Institute for Book Studies, the BELMA (Best European Learning Materials Award) will be awarded live at the Frankfurt Book Fair!
The BELMA is given every year to the outstanding educational materials from all over Europe. The products (online, printed or blended) are entered into the competition in four categories according to school types and age group of learners. With an international jury of eight experts from curriculum development, teaching, teacher training and publishing assessing each submitted entry and writing a thorough evaluation for each, the BELMA award is prestigious – and the awards ceremony is set to be a highlight of the Frankfurt Book Fair agenda.
- 5. Rethinking sustainability?! – Perspectives along the value chain, October 20, 10:00 – 11:00
Sustainability is front and centre of all publishers’ minds, so this session is set to bring the value in a big way. Discussions on the current status of corporate social responsibility and sustainability in the publishing and media industry will be explored, with a deep dive into the experiences, perspectives and concrete implementations of various companies and organisations.

The #BookTok community has been growing continuously for years and inspires millions of TikTok users worldwide. This year TikTok have their own stage at The Frankfurt Book Fair, where you can try your hand at recording your own videos in the #BookTok Creation Corner and streaming them live from the fair to book fans all over the world. Fun and educational? This is something not to be missed!
