World Mental Health Day. 5 ways to help and raise awareness.

Every year the World Health Organisation recognizes World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to spreading awareness and knowledge of mental health illnesses…

Since last year’s World Mental Health Day the world has continued to fight, amongst other issues and causes, Covid-19, systematic oppression and Global Warming. With such stress, difficulty, and sadness in the world, it is important to take today to recognize and offer support to those amongst us struggling with our mental health.

There is always help available to those who need it. If you, or someone you know, is struggling with their mental health, here are a few options and resources to help:

  • Apps such as Calm offer free meditations and breathing exercises, which can help you when you are feeling anxious and stressed.

  • Universities and schools usually have a Student Wellbeing Centre, where you can pop in and get free advice and support.

  • Doing physical activities regularly can help elevate your mood and reduce stress and anxiety. You don’t need to join a gym to start getting these benefits: try getting off the bus one stop earlier and walking the rest of the way home, or engaging in some energetic housework to get your heartrate up!

  • Visit your Doctor. They will have access to a range of support options for you. From talking therapies to medication if required, having the medical support of your family doctor can help you take charge of how you are feeling.

Mental Health can affect any and all of us, at any time. Knowing you are not alone and that there is support available for everyone is so important. It saves lives.
