Hurricane Safety Education

  • by

Hurricane Harvey caused inconceivable damage in Texas this week with at least 30 people killed and over 20,000 affected. This catastrophic disaster has forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes and hundreds of schools to close. The fear and uncertainty experienced by families in Texas is unimaginable and our hearts go out to those affected by this tragic event.

Unpredictable natural disasters, like Hurricane Harvey, can jeopardize young people’s safety and well-being, especially if they are unaware of the most effective safety procedures. Nonetheless, children’s competence and autonomy should not be undervalued because, when properly directed, children will often adopt a surprisingly mature manner in the face of danger.

Teaching children how to stay safe during a hurricane is therefore vital to ensure they comprehend the dangers and respond appropriately. Based on this understanding and in response to the shocking events in Texas, Quizalize has produced a hurricane awareness quiz. This simple quiz aims to help young people understand the importance of staying safe in hurricane season and to teach them basic strategies to employ when a hurricane strikes.

We cannot begin to imagine what individuals and families in Texas must be experiencing, but we hope this small educational insight will increase young people’s safety awareness so they can protect themselves during these challenging times.
