Accelerating English Language Acquisition for Emergent Bilingual Learners Using Quizalize

Colorful banner illustration of two happy students learning English with Quizalize. Across the United States, the number of Emergent Bilingual (EB) students — sometimes referred to as English Language Learners (ELs or ELLs) — continues to grow. These students bring rich cultural and linguistic diversity to classrooms, but they also face the dual challenge of mastering academic content while developing English proficiency.

At Quizalize, we believe language learning shouldn’t be a barrier to content learning — it should be integrated seamlessly into every lesson. That’s why we’re building tools that empower teachers to accelerate English acquisition while keeping EB students fully engaged in core subjects.

How Quizalize Supports Emergent Bilingual Students Today

1. Quizzes in Any Language

Our AI powered quiz creator lets teachers instantly create quizzes in any language. This makes it easy to build parallel activities — for example, it’s easy to create three equivalent fractions quizzes, one in English, one in Spanish, and one in Chinese.

2. AI Vocabulary Builders

With our special AI-powered “Vocabulary” tool, teachers can type in a topic (e.g., human body organs) and instantly generate a Spanish–English vocabulary quiz. EB students can practice essential subject-specific words before tackling science, math, or history lessons on the subject. This builds both content knowledge and language skills simultaneously.

3. AI Reading Comprehension Tools

Teachers can also paste in an English passage and automatically generate comprehension questions in any other language, such as Spanish. For example, before a history lesson on Ancient Egypt, EB students can engage with interesting content in English whilst questions in Spanish give them vocabulary and grammar clues in context.

4. Digital versions of NYSESLAT

At the request of some of our school districts in New York, we’ve digitised New York state’s NYESLAT released sample tests. Whilst specific to New York State they can be used in any school for evaluating EB students English level and identifying each student’s current learning gaps.

What’s Coming Soon in Quizalize

We’re not stopping there. Over the coming months, we’re rolling out powerful new features designed specifically with EB students in mind:

  • Instant Quiz Translation
Instantly translate any quiz into any language — including our library of 500 digitized  STAAR and NYSED (Grade 3-8 and Regents) released practice tests, helping EB students prepare more effectively.
  • An EB-Friendly Quiz Player
In the works is our new quiz player where students will be able to select their native language at the start of any quiz. But instead of simply automatically translating everything we plan to turn any quiz into an interactive in context language lesson.  Students will be able to click on unfamiliar words to see:
    • A simplified English explanation first
    • A Spanish (or other language) translation if needed

This approach keeps students in “English mode” as much as possible while still offering support.

  • Listening Comprehension Quizzes
Expanding our reading comprehension tools to include listening exercises, giving EB students more opportunities to develop academic listening skills.
  • Marvely.ai EB Scenarios
Through our sister app, Marvely.ai, students will soon access interactive speaking scenarios focused on:
    • Survival English (everyday communication in school and beyond)
    • Classroom English (academic vocabulary and grammar for specific subjects, e.g., “Discuss the human heart with a partner”).

Even better, we’re working on English scenarios for Marvely that directly help teachers prepare students for the speaking part of annual state EB exams such as TELPAS, NYSELAT and ELPAC.

Why This Matters

For EB students, success comes when language development and content mastery happen together. Quizalize is designed to make that possible — transforming every quiz, every lesson, and every subject into a natural opportunity for English acquisition.

Instead of struggling with content because of a language barrier, EB students can engage with core material, practice English in context, and build the confidence they need to thrive in the classroom.

Final Thoughts

Emergent Bilingual students deserve tools that respect both their learning journey and their potential. With Quizalize, teachers can provide the scaffolding EB learners need — while still challenging them to grow academically and linguistically.

We’re excited to continue building features that make English language acquisition faster, more engaging, and more effective for students everywhere.
